They can often only be destroyed by strong abilities such as Hammer Mario's hammers or by being touched when Mario is giant or invincible. They sometimes grunt when they land, and are often seen with an angry expression on their face. They typically attempt to fall on and flatten whomever passes below them, although some move horizontally or diagonally as well. They are normally depicted as spike-encrusted living stones that are usually rectangular in shape and made their first appearance in the game Super Mario Bros.
